Courageous Citizens Across the City Reduce Crime by Taking Ownership of Long-term Safety
What: St. Louis City citizens are taking the lead role in fighting crime in their communities, and they want to urge other citizens to do the same. For more than two years, dozens of citizens in neighborhoods across the City have partnered with law enforcement and city officials to take ownership of the long-term safety of their neighborhoods. The results of their efforts are remarkable.
"As a resident and business owner in the City of St. Louis, I know that only I and my neighbors can make my neighborhood a safe place. When we worked together to manage our own crime issues, to patrol our streets and to monitor criminal cases in our neighborhood, we had our lowest rate of crime in five years." Michael Petetit, Chairperson, Lafayette Square Safety Committee.
Senior officials scheduled to attend in a supporting role include: event host Greg Carter, Alderman 27 Ward; Francis Slay, Mayor City of St. Louis; Lewis Reed, President of the Board of Alderman; the Honorable Steven Ohmer, Presiding Judge 22nd Judicial Circuit; Chief Dan Isom, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department; Jennifer Joyce, St. Louis Circuit Attorney, various police officers, aldermen and others who support the efforts of citizens standing up for safe communities.

One neighborhood Lafayette Square developed tactics and plans where they successfully harassed the power of the residents to make their neighborhood stronger and safer. Seeing the success of Lafayette Square, Chief Isom and Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce met with some community members who successfully worked to reduce crime in their neighborhood. Using the principles those community leaders applied, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and the Circuit Attorney's Office and Michael Petetit from Lafayette Square developed a Six Step Plan to help guide neighborhood in the path of owning and managing their own security.
