First Alert 4– At the two-year mark since the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office (CAO) agreed to review the rape conviction of Fredrico Lowe-Bey, the office told First Alert 4 it is taking a deeper look at the case.

The CAO took Lowe-Bey's review application into consideration in May 2024. The current review by the office's Conviction Integrity Unit is the biggest development since then, and puts the office one step closer to making a determination on whether to open a full investigation into the 38-year-old conviction.

Lowe-Bey was convicted of rape and sodomy in 1988, before DNA testing was available. A judge sentenced him to 85 years in prison. He has always maintained his innocence.

Two reports later excluded Lowe-Bey as the source of DNA in the case, one that analyzed sperm and another that analyzed the victim's clothing.

The state's argument that the sperm was deposited during an encounter prior to the rape was brought into question by hospital records that didn't come to light until 2014, years after the DNA findings were litigated.
