ST. LOUIS – A 45-year-old man was found guilty Thursday in connection to a murder last year at an apartment complex in north St. Louis.

According to the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office, the jury came back with a guilty verdict against Johnny Haynes for voluntary manslaughter, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Haynes was at an apartment complex in the 4300 block of Saint Ferdinand Ave. on March 30, 2025, to confront his girlfriend and her cousin. The three went to another floor of the building, which is where Mikell Rayford confronted Haynes on being “loud and belligerent,” officials said.

Haynes then pulled out a handgun and shot Rayford one time, who died at the scene. He was 27.
