February 19, 2026

ST. LOUIS, MO  (February 19, 2026) — Larry Buchanan, 42, was sentenced Thursday to 16 years in prison for first-degree assault in a shooting that left a woman paralyzed in the City’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood.

Buchanan committed the offense on April 13, 2024, at a gas station in the 4300 block of South Broadway. The 32-year-old female victim stood outside the gas station when Buchanan arrived in a Chevy Impala and approached her.

After a brief interaction, Buchanan removed a handgun from his waistband and attempted to take marijuana from the victim. When the victim tried to flee, Buchanan struck her with the firearm. The victim broke free and ran, at which point Buchanan fired one shot, striking her in the back. The shooting caused permanent paralysis. Surveillance cameras captured the incident.

“The woman who was shot will live with the consequences of this violence for the rest of her life,” said Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore. “When people choose gun violence to resolve conflicts, this office will prosecute these cases to the fullest extent of the law.”

Buchanan has prior felony convictions for being a felon in possession of a firearm, second-degree burglary, and first-degree assault.

Assistant Circuit Attorney Michael Ware, Violent Crime Unit Supervisor Adam Field, and Assistant Circuit Attorney Kate Cogan prosecuted the case.

The defendant’s case number is 2422-CR03627.
