Tyrone Williams Sentenced to Life Without Parole In Death of Stephen Bosley Byes
December 6, 2023

ST. LOUIS, MO (December 6, 2023) — St. Louis Circuit Judge Theresa Counts Burke sentenced Tyrone Williams, 36, to life in prison for the shooting death of Stephen Bosley Byes, 37 in The Greater Ville neighborhood on Sept. 8, 2021.

On Nov. 2, 2023, a jury found Williams guilty of First-Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action in the shooting. Under Missouri law, the punishment for first-degree murder is mandatory life in prison without the possibility of probation or parole. Burke also sentenced Williams to a consecutive three-year term for armed criminal action.

On the evening of the murder, Williams got into a fist fight with the victim at the home of Tarez Campbell, with whom both men have children. Neighbors broke up the fight and Williams left with his daughter in Campbell’s car. He returned after Campbell called and asked him to bring her car back,  parking it in front of Byes’ house, which was across the street from Campbell’s home.

As Campbell was walking with the child back to their home, she heard multiple gunshots and turned to see Williams firing several shots from her vehicle at Byes. Byes ducked behind his own parked car for cover, grabbed a gun and returned fire before collapsing and dying in the street.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant Circuit Attorney Tanja Engelhardt, who heads the Circuit Attorney’s Violent Crimes Unit, and Assistant Circuit Attorney Adam Field.
